Well, well, well! I’ve made it to week 4 and let me tell you what a relief it is to be more than half way done with this course. I can see the light now! Plus, this week is much easier than last week as this week hits a nerve from within. I have such empathy for our students today that are victims of cyberbullying. This week during our weekly conference, Monday night, I was online listening to Dr. Still discuss our assignments for the week and provide us a snapshot of cyberbullying. Our call is at 7 p.m. and I was just sitting down to eat dinner with my 15-year-old son and he was able to hear our conversations as I wasn’t using headphones and when our session was over he asked “Is cyberbullying a real thing?”. Wow, was I was shocked, yet relieved all in the same. I was shocked that he didn’t know that it was a real thing, but in the same I was relieved as that must mean he’s not a victim or knows anyone that is… or maybe it is he doesn’t recognize it. Hmmm. Cyberbullying is a real thing that students experience daily. As statistics show roughly 52% of teenagers report they were cyberbullied and one out of every six teenagers have cyberbullied others. Cyberbullying is when one is cruel, insensitive, and mean towards others and it typically arises when you combine teenagers, technology, and trouble. The repercussions of cyberbullying can last for a life time especially since what one puts on the internet stays on the internet forever. Bullying is not a new concept as its been around for a long time, again mostly by teenagers. Why do teenagers do this? Most would say that these teenagers are loners or lack self-esteem, but in reality there are many reasons why teenagers feel the need to bully. Sherri Gordon shares eight reasons why teenagers bully others. One reason is they want to have power or control of others or they do it for popularity to climb the social ladder. Some do it for pure payback as they were victims themselves and they want to strike back or get revenge or it is because they come from a home with abuse. Others bully for pleasure because they are just bored while others do it to point out the differences in people, a type of prejudice. Lastly, she says they do it because of the peer pressure they face to fit in with certain circles (Gordon, 2019). Now, take all those various reasons teenagers bully and intensify that since the introduction of social media. Social media is providing an easy outlet for more teenagers to interact with each other whether it be for good or bad. Many teenagers have more courage to be ugly toward others online versus in person which opens the door to more bullying. Teenagers are becoming immune to cyberbullying as they don’t see it as that big of a deal. We need to teach our kids the importance of cyberbullying and the consequences behind it. Share with them some of the videos we have watched in this course, as I have done with my son, or find some that is appropriate for the age group you teach online. We can stay ahead of cyberbullying if we teach our kids how to be more empathetic toward others. References
