Steps to Implement a Flipped Classroom
This plan will help implement my innovation proposal for bringing the flipped classroom model into our 6th Grade Math Classes at McDonald Junior High. My literature review summarizes my research of a flipped classroom and supports my ideas of implementing it within our math department.
Phase I: Discovery & Planning
Purpose
Benefits for Students
Approval/Buy-In
Cost
- Incorporate a flipped learning model in the 6th grade math classes
- Give students more time in the classroom to really learn how to compute the problems through active learning with their peers and teacher
- Meet the students where they are with digital tools
Benefits for Students
- Learn the material on a deeper level and are more likely to retain it
- Students enjoy anything technology
- Increase peer to peer communication
- Real time feedback on assessments
- Online tutorials (additional videos for clarity)
- Learn the material at their own pace
- The lesson is always available for quick reference
- Easier to catch up missed work
Approval/Buy-In
- Present innovation plan to the campus administration (Campus Principal, Assistant Principals, and Instructional Coaches)
- Discuss ideas and plan to the District Technology Department to get any technology support needed.
- Recruit teachers to encourage maximum participation across the campus
Cost
- No immediate cost to school
- Students can BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) to school
- Teachers have 10 iPads in their classroom for student use
- Canvas is the platform that will be used to provide the lessons to the students and quizzes which is our district wide learning management system (LMS)
Phase II: Design & Development
First Semester (Spring 2019)
Canvas
Flipped Classroom
Trial (March 2019-May 2019)
Summer 2019
Canvas
- 6th Grade Math Teachers need to create a generic master copy on canvas to share
- Create the layout/modules
- Decide what the format will be so it’s consistent this way making it easier for the students
- Classroom Technology Designers (CTDs) to support during conference periods
- Students need to learn how to log-in and navigate the LMS
Flipped Classroom
- 6th Grade Math Teachers need to create a design or layout of the flipped classroom
- Create a lesson map
- Decide the expectations and directions
- Teachers use Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to meet weekly to discuss the flipped classroom
- Teachers need to divide and conquer each unit or chapter to share the work load
- Create videos and notes pages to accompany the video
- Develop a quiz (in Canvas) to assess the student understanding of the video lesson
- Create in class activities or assignments
- Create online and paper assessments
- Math Instructional Coach to support during conferences and PLCs
- Students need to be educated on what a flipped classroom is and what their expectations are
- Have an open house or parent night to educate the parents on what a flipped classroom is
Trial (March 2019-May 2019)
- 6th Grade Math Teachers should test one lesson every other week with their students until the end of the semester
- Create a survey for the students to discover the pros and cons of a flipped classroom from a student point of view
- Meeting with 6th Grade Math Teachers to discuss successes and failures and how it can be done better
- At the end of the school year sit and discuss flipped classroom with the students to get additional feedback directly from students to get a better feel for their thoughts
Summer 2019
- 6th Grade Math Teachers get technology training from the Technology Department as they do an iCamp every summer for a couple weeks
- Analyze data, survey and information provided from the students at the end of the year
- 6th Grade Math Teachers need to continue developing their lessons and recording them over the summer
Phase III: Implementation (Deployment)
Second Semester (Fall 2019)
Canvas
Flipped Classroom Begins
Grading
Evaluations
Canvas
- Teachers need to upload or embed their videos, lessons, and other materials on Canvas so the students can access them
- Teachers will need to publish the material giving the students access
Flipped Classroom Begins
- Before class check the Canvas video lesson quiz to see who completed the preliminary assignment and see how well they did so you know what needs to be addressed in class prior to beginning the in-class activities
- Ensure the activities include active learning, peer instruction, and collaborative learning getting the students to think deeper on the material
- Teacher walks around the classroom observing discussions and engaging with students to confirm understanding or draw out more discussion
- Teachers need to provide time at the beginning of class for any questions the student might have on the video lesson
- Provide students directions on next assignment
Grading
- Canvas Quizzes – students can take them twice and receive the highest of the two grades
- Video Lessons – check for understanding questionnaire counts as a homework grade and students will receive multiple attempts to get the highest score possible as this enhances understanding and encourages students to watch/listen to the video lecture again until they have a better grasp of the material
Evaluations
- Students will complete an evaluation on flipped classroom at the end of the Second Semester in google forms
- Reassess and redefine for continuous improvement
